Myliko extends portfolio with Armenian and Hungarian wineries

Armenia Wines and Grand Tokaj of Hungary join the importer and distributor’s portfolio with immediate effect and will be targeted at the independent and on-trade sectors, with bespoke labels and blends created for the off-trade.

The wines from Armenia would be new to the UK and exclusive to Myliko, said company co-director, Nish Kotecha. The business would also have exclusivity in the UK for state-owned Grand Tokaj.

The “history and sophistication of both the wineries” were a perfect fit for Myliko and came at a time of sustained growth for emerging wine-producing countries in the UK, she said.

Family-owned Armenia Wines began planting new vineyards in 2006 and has invested in the latest winemaking technology to make their wines from indigenous grapes planted in all three of the country’s winemaking regions – Armavir, Aragatsotn and Voyots Dzor.

The whites are described as noticeably crisp with mineral and fine fruit aromas and the reds are intense with dark berry aromas. Myliko has introduced the mid-range wines, Yerevan, which will retail below £10.

With 54hc vineyards, Grand Tokaj played a “vital role” in the wine region accounting for nearly 30% of the region’s total wine production, said Kotecha, adding Myliko would be placing a focus on the dry whites made with the native Hungarian Furmint grape, which she referred to as “highly fragrant and full-bodied”, with a comparatively high acidity.

Established in 1991 initially as a Hungarian wine specialist, Myliko Wines was now ships wines from 12 countries, from modern wineries with the latest wine making technologies to smaller boutique family run wineries.
