Brexit panel debate set for LWF

Brexit and its impact on wine industry’s the flow of trade will take centre stage at this months’ London Wine Fair (LWF).

Following its inauguration last year to pose difficult questions affecting the trade, the Grapevine Debate will return on May 22, this year to look the effect of Brexit on imports and exports.

Event director Ross Carter said that the debate topic was chosen due to overwhelming feedback from those who are due to attend, and will look specifically at the effects on the UK wine market, positives that can be gained and how the UK wine industry can plan effectively.

A number of experts in the fields of politics, economics will appear on the panel, including Dr Swati Dhingra, an assistant professor at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Dr Dhingra will comment on relationships between the EU and the UK, the implications for VAT and import duties, and the impact on importing and exporting.

Joining her will Guy Harvey, a partner at City law firm and Dr Abel D. Alonso, from Liverpool Business School, who has been researching the potential impacts of Brexit on European and New World wine producing countries.

Miles Beale will also update the trade on the Wine & Spirit Trade Association’s (WSTA) key priorities: to retain tariff-free movement of goods, revised tariff-free trade agreements with countries outside the EU, and the minimisation of additional border checks.

The Grapevine Debate will take place on Monday, May 22, at 12pm in the Industry Briefings Theatre.
