Published:  10 August, 2016

Tragedy has struck a nightclub in south London after fire broke out on Monday afternoon - claiming the life of an employee.

Police are launching an investigation into the fire, which drew 100 firefighters to the location in Greenwhich.

The employee has not been formally identified by police, but has been named as Tomas in a tribute posted by the club on its Facebook page.

"Our hearts are smashed and broken. Tomas fought for as long as he could given the extent of his injuries. He was as strong as an Ox but it was too much even for him. We are so sad to tell you all that he died a few minutes ago," the statement said.

It went on, adding: "He was so pure and beautiful. An inspiration to us all, always positive, never complaining, working through the night to make sure the parties were the best they could be for you and us.

"We are all so devastated to lose him like this. Everything we do from now on is for you our brother."

The inaugural Spirit of Tiki event due to be held at the venue on August 14 and 15 has been cancelled.

A spokesperson for the company they are "beyond disappointed" at having to cancel, but will reschedule at a later date.

Those who have bought tickets for the event will be issued an automatic refund.
