Last night at the annual International Wine Challenge awards dinner in London, five wines were crowned Champions and one wine took home the Champion of Champions award, recognised as some of the top gongs in the industry.
Charles Metcalfe, co-chairman of the IWC said: "This year's IWC has been one of the most competitive we have ever seen, and these Champion wines are truly amazing. To beat thousands of entries from all around the world, and come out on top in this competition is a huge achievement."
The Champion wines won awards during the rigorous judging process in April. The best wines in each style from every country were selected and awarded a National Trophy and of these national trophy winners only one wine was selected to win the Champion trophy for the five catogories.
The Champion of Champions award went to The Harveys Very Old Amontillado 30 Year Old V.O.R.S from Bodegas Harvey. The award is open to all wines who have received a Champion status in a previous competition.
France took home three Champion trophies this year for the top sparkling wine, top white wine and top red wine. Champagne de Saint Gall Cuvée Orpale Grand Cru 2002 received the Daniel Thibault Trophy for Champion Sparkling Wine 2016.
