Leading Spanish wine and sherry producer González Byass has acquired the Pazos de Lusco winery in Rías Baixas for an undisclosed sum.
Pazos de Lusco represents the company's first vineyard in the Rías Baixas wine-making region, to add to those it already has in Rioja, Jerez, Cadiz, Cava, Penedés, Rueda, Somontano and Castilla.
Wineries already under the González Byass umbrella Bodegas Beronia, Viñas del Vero, Finca Constancia, Cavas Vilarnau and Finca Moncloa.
Founded in 1996, Pazos de Lusco is located in Salvaterra do Miño in the Pontevedre province of Galicia, close to the Río Miño which marks the border with Portugal.
It has five hectares of land under vine, all planted using the traditional pergola system.
The vineyard produces wines exclusively made using the Albariño grape variety, which is particularly suited to the Galician Atlantic coastal climate.
The estate is built on gentle rolling hills distinguished by sandy soils that are also rich in clay, limestone and granite.
The Pazos de Lusco winery is located in the heart of the vineyard, close to Pazo Piñeiro, a sixteenth-century manor consisting of a large house, chapel, stables and a small lodge.
Its Lusco and Pazo Piñeiro crianzas are both highly regarded, as is its Zios joven.
González Byass was founded in 1835.
Alongside its wines, it is well known for its range of sherries and brandies, which include Tío Pepe and Lepanto Brandy de Jerez.
The company has also expanded into the premium spirits sector with brand such as The London No.1 Gin, Druide Vodka and Nomad Outland Whisky.
