Stellenbosch estate, L'Avenir is to launch a new premium rosé at Cape Wine in September. The wine, named Glenrosé, will be 100% Pinotage.
The wine takes it name from a prominent vein of Glenrosa soil which runs through the single-vineyard block used to create L'Avenir's award-winning Single Block Pinotage.
L'Avenir winemaker Dirk Coetzee harvested the small number of vines to produce just 2,500 bottles of the Provence-style rosé.
The wine was created in part to honour the vineyard's links with France as part of the AdVini group of wineries.
Coetzee said: "I think Glenrosé is a different and fascinating representation of the Pinotage grape. It shows the grace of Pinotage produced from vines thriving in notably trying terroir.
"South Africa has the potential to produce rosés that are fine wines in their own right. This for us is just the beginning."
Glenrosé 2015 comes in a bespoke bottle with a Protea flower-shaped punt and sealed with a glass stopper. It is expected to retail at around €20.
L'Avenir is a 27-ha estate in the Stellenbosch region of the Western Cape. Its vines are exceptionally mature - some are as much as 40 years old - and its consequent low yields result in particularly complex wines.
AdVini acquired L'Avenir in 2009.
Cape Wine will take place between 15 and 17 September this year, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
