Liberty Wines has boosted its New Zealand portfolio after signing up wine producer Akarua.

The Central Otago producer is owned by the Skeggs family, who have farmed vineyards in the region since the mid 1990s and last year doubled their holding in Bannockburn and Lowburn to around 100 hectares.

Liberty Wines managing director David Gleave MW said the extension was of great importance in such a challenging wine producing area and Akarua now owned one of the finest collection of vineyards in Central Otago.

"The importance of site is evident in their wines, which have a freshness and balance that we look for. While we have known Akarua for many years, we were delighted to taste their new Sparkling wines, which Dr Tony Jordan is now making. He has long been convinced by Central Otago's potential for producing top quality fizz and is now doing so at Akarua alongside Matt," Gleave said.

The business if run by second generation David Skeggs, while Matt Connell heads up the winemaking team.

Liberty will stock four wines from Akarua, comprising Pinot Noir 2012 (RRP £26.99), single-estate traditional method sparkling wines Akarua Brut NV and Rosé Brut NV (both RRP £19.99), and Rua Pinot Noir 2013 (RRP £19.99) from Central Otago.
