Pomerol's Château La Conseillante, owned for the past 140 years by the Nicolas family, has acquired an additional 3,000m² plot in the area.
This parcel of 3,150 m², known as La Gravette, is planted with 25-year-old Merlot vines at a density of 6,060 vines per hectare.
The family describe the plot's soil as gravelly, adding that the terroir is similar to the top parcels in Conseillante's existing vineyard.
La Conseillante's vineyard extends over 12 hectares, which is divided into 18 micro-plots. It has remained unchanged since the 18th century, which makes this acquisition all the more significant. The chateau was founded in 1735, and has been in the Nicolas family's hands since 1874.
Recently the Nicolas family enhanced the winemaking facilities at the chateau with 22 new tanks and facilities.
La Conseillante's vineyards border those of Cheval Blanc and L'Evangile and are on the boundary with the St Emilion appellation.
Monday will see the start of Bordeaux's en primeur week, when chateaux welcome international critics to their doors to taste barrel samples of the most recent vintage, 2013. They then release prices, although the wines themselves are still maturing and not yet ready to leave the chateaux.
