Published:  25 September, 2013

Sud de France has announced the winner of its coveted Sommelier of the Year title - Adam Pawlowski of Michelin-starred restaurant Northcote.

The fifth annual competition put 50 of the UK's top sommeliers through the paces to find the entrant with the best knowledge of the Languedoc-Roussillon and its wines.

The initial 50 were whittled down to 11 for the semi-final and just three sommeliers for the final - Pawlowski, Florent Belotti from the New Street Grill and Terry Kandylis from the Ledbury. Finalist were assessed in food and wine matching, blind tasting and service.

The competition was judged by an expert panel chaired by Ronan Sayburn MS, with help from Pascal Aussignac, head chef and owner of Club Gascon, Chris Losh, editor of Imbibe magazine, and last year's winner Lionel Periner of the Lucky Onion Group.

Sayburn said: "I have been extremely impressed with the competing sommeliers' skills and knowledge of Languedoc-Roussillon, a diverse and complex wine region. Adam Pawlowski is a truly deserving winner, and a credit to the sommelier profession."

Pawlowski added: "The competition was challenging but thoroughly enjoyable and I am honoured to have been named the winner, amongst some very talented sommeliers."
