New German wine range targets Indian restaurants

Published:  30 July, 2013

South German winegrowers' co-operative Winzer vom Weinsberger Tal has launched a new range, Young Line Wines, and hopes to break into the UK market by exclusively targeting Indian restaurants.

Winehaus, speciality importer of south German wines, held seminars on German wine and Indian food pairing at this year's LIWF to showcase the Young Line range, demonstrating the potential sweeter-styled wines have in the UK for pairing with spicy foods.

Georg Neumann of East West Wine, the exclusive exporter for Winzer vom Weinsberger Tal, said: "All the wines in the Young Line range are wonderful to pair with Indian, Pakistani, Caribbean or other spicy food. All these wines have a typically exceptional fruity taste."

He believes the wines have a chance to break in to the UK market by focusing on such a niche area as ethnic and Indian restaurants.

The Young Line range has three wines, a red, a white and a rosé, all of which have low alcohol levels and medium residual sugar. The wines, including the red Dornfelder, are meant to be served chilled so as to complement spicier cuisines. The colourful packaging has been designed to suit Indian restaurants.

Des Jones, managing director at Winehaus in the UK, said Asian and Indian food and wine pairing in the UK has been severely overlooked and there is a gap in the market for wines that are tailored to a specific type of food."There has been lots of interest in other countries and we don't see many of these wines in the UK today," he said.
