English wine producer Nyetimber has announced plans to export to Japan from June this year.

English wine producer Nyetimber has announced plans to export to Japan from June this year.

The winery's inaugural export partnership is with Tokyo-based premium wine distributor Enoteca, which is to be the exclusive distributor of Nyetimber in Japan.

The announcement was made at the Queen's birthday party in Tokyo hosted by the British ambassador to Japan, Tim Hitchins, at the British ambassador's residence, where Nyetimber Classic Cuvée 2008 was served to a crowd of 1,000 people.

Christian Holthausen, Nyetimber's marketing and communications manager, said the wines will be Nyetimber Classic Cuvée 2008, Blanc de Blancs 2007 and a Rosé 2009, which will be released in Japan two weeks before its UK launch.

Holthausen told Harpers: "Japan is a sophisticated sparkling wine market and the fifth largest export market for Champagne. Consumers in Japan are also interested in grower Champagnes and special cuvées, so we think it's a good fit for a brand like Nyetimber."

The company has shipped one 40ft container and Holthausen hopes this will be the first of many.

The wines will be available in Enoteca's 50 wine shops throughout Japan, as well as premium on and off-trade.

"Enoteca is very proud to be Nyetimber's first official partner in the export market and know that lots of Japanese wine lovers will soon discover amazing, high-quality sparkling wine from England," said a company spokesperson. "We are confident that Nyetimber will have much success in Japan."
