Published:  23 October, 2012

Laura Jewell MW is to become the first female chairman of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), taking over from the current chairman Bill Page.

Jewell is currently one of eight members of the Board of Trustees of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), and will take over with effect from December 10.

Jewell joined the product development team at Tesco in September 2010 and is personally responsible for the Finest range of over 100 products. She has also led the development of own-label and exclusive wines with her team, with over 300 new lines introduced in the past 12 months. Tesco won the Wine Supermarket of the Year award at this year's IWC, following two years of dynamic development in store and online.

Laura was the trading controller for Spar from 2009 to 2010, and prior to that held positions as agency director of HwCg and senior buyer at Sainsbury's. Jewell gained her MW in 1997 while working as a wine buyer at the Waverley Group.

She becomes the 13th chairman of the Board of Trustees in the 43-year history of WSET.

Bill Page, said: "It has been a privilege for me to be part of a British success story, which has seen WSET grow to be the biggest and most highly respected global organisation in wine and spirit education and qualifications in the world, and in handing over the reins to Laura, I know WSET will be safe hands, and that she will give 100% support to Ian Harris and his team as WSET continues its exponential growth."
