As this is my first ever Benevolent column I thought it would be fitting to start with some "Benevolent basics". I'm aware from discussions I've had around the trade that not everyone understands the work that is done by our trade charity. I have heard it suggested that it's "something to do with old people" or "we've heard of it but are not really sure what is does or who it helps".

Restaurant review: The Lamb Inn

My room is named after The Glenlivet, and part of a spent cask from the Speyside distillery protrudes. This is The Lamb Inn, 15th-century outpost of the Boisdale group. Ranald Macdonald founded his first whisky and cigar focused bar in Belgravia in 1988. The business expanded to Bishopsgate in 2002, with the opulent, purpose-built Canary Wharf site opening in 2011.

The dining table at the New Street Wine Shop in the City of London was sufficient to accommodate the small gathering of AWE wine educators to taste with Sebastían Labbé, chief winemaker at Santa Rita Estate's Carmen winery. What was billed as a "Coastal Chile" tasting in the end turned out to be a tasting of select wines from the Carmen stable - coastal and otherwise.
