Rosé up 43% and Champagne 'strong' as summer sun brings cheer to Waitrose drinks sales

Published:  13 July, 2015

Recent warm weather in parts of the UK has seen sales of some wines and spirits soar at Waitrose.

Commercial director Mark Williamson said that a mixture of sunshine and UK sporting heroics by the England women's football team and British tennis players in the early rounds of Wimbledon gave a boost to Champagne, rosé and gin.

Overall sales for the supermarket were up 6.2% in the week to July 4, against the same week last year.

"Champagne sales stayed strong, Pimm's sales jumped by an incredible 137%, rosé sales leapt by 43% and gin sales increased by 34%," he said. "Mixers were up 67% and we saw record breaking beer sales with bottled beer up 47%.

"The hot temperatures and July 4 falling on a weekend gave many customers the perfect opportunity to feast with family and friends."

Williamson added that "the Glastonbury effect" brought about a 12% week-on-week increase in sales at its Welcome Break motorway services shops.
