Published:  23 July, 2008

INDIA: United Spirits said it will begin exporting wines to Europe and the US from March 2008.

Six wines will be exported to France including varieties made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc.

The packaging will be "ethnic" to attract customers to the wines made in India, Abhay Kewadkar United Spirit's chief wine maker, said.

United Spirits, owned by Vijay Mallya, expects to produce 600,000 bottles in the first year of its new wine manufacturing facility near Baramati near Pune. 10% of that will be exported.

The company also plans to acquire further land around the facility giving it 300-acres of its own vineyard in Baramati, Kewadkar said.

The company also said it plans to add 300 foreign labels to its portfolio. Of these, 40 to 50 labels will be launched in the first quarter of the next fiscal.
