WSTA calls for compulsory alcohol education for children

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) is urging ministers to make education about alcohol a compulsory element of the school curriculum.

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) is urging ministers to make education about alcohol a compulsory element of the school curriculum.

Welcoming today's government announcement that that Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) is to become a compulsory part of the curriculum for children aged from five to 16, the WSTA called for specific time to be allocated in the national curriculum to alcohol education.

The government announcement coincides with publication of research by the Department for Children, Schools and Families showing purchase of alcohol is regarded as more acceptable by 15 and 16 year olds than dropping litter.

Jeremy Beadles, chief executive of the WSTA, said: "It's clear from the government's own research that attitudes to alcohol need to change and consistent education about it to all children is vital if we are to achieve that.

"We welcome the Government's emphasis on the importance of Personal Social and Health Education but it's time to ensure that alcohol education is given proper time, is relevant to young people and builds on the most successful programmes in the UK and from other countries."

Should alcohol education be included as part of the national curriculum in schools? Have your say in our comment area.
