Flagstone head says South Africa is not New World': LIWF 2008

Published:  23 July, 2008

Bruce Jack, the head of Flagstone Winery, has stated he does not consider the South African wine industry to fit within the New World' bracket.

The Flagstone chief was responding to a question at Constellation's panel debate, QwIne, on the first day (May 20) of the London International Wine Fair (LIWF).

The question raised the issue of diversity and whether South Africa is only suitable for growing Pinotage and Chenin Blanc.

Jack said: "We've got the most diverse soil on the globe. I don't consider ourselves New World. The term has nothing to do with soil.

"In terms of Terroir, South Africa is the Old World. It's important to understand the complexity and diversity of soil on the continent."

The issue of diversity in South Africa is already proven with more opportunities to come, he added.
