PHYLLOXERA IN CENTRAL OTAGO

Published:  23 July, 2008

Phylloxera has recently been discovered in an Alexandra vineyard in Central Otago, though Steve Green, president of the Central Otago Winegrowers Association, has stressed that the outbreak can be contained by the even stricter application of existing controls on the movement of vines and equipment. Green said that many of the region's vines were on phylloxera-resistant rootstocks, and that those which were not would be replaced. The quality of wine will not suffer, he said, and the lower cropping levels may even be beneficial. It's the viability of the vineyard that will suffer - not the quality of the wine. Phylloxera is essentially an economic issue.'
