Christie's 2007 wine sales set record
It has been a record year for global wine sales for Christie's International Wine Department.
Total sales figures of 36 million pounds were underpinned by 39 auctions across nine global locations in 2007 including London, New York, Paris and Amsterdam.
The year's top lot was sold at a Los Angeles auction - 30 dozen bottle cases of Chteau Mouton-Rothschild that achieved $288,000 (145,000 pounds).
David Elswood, international head of Christie's Wine Department, commented: "This has been an exceptional year for Christie's wine sales. Against the background of a healthy and rising global market for fine wine, we have seen new auction total records established in Los Angeles, Geneva and Amsterdam and great strength in our London, New York and Paris salerooms."
The auction house was particularly buoyed by the fact that 2007 sales were up 22% on the previous year's total.
Europe saw strong growth also with 29 sales held across the year raising just over 22m pounds - a 45% increase on regional turnover for 2006.
The number one sale item in Europe was a 12-bottle case of 1961 Hermitage La Chapelle, which went for 123,750 pounds - a world record for a case of Rhne.
