Bordeaux Négoce takes position for 2020 Primeurs campaign

Published:  26 January, 2021

Bordeaux Négoce has said the Bordeaux wine trade is ready for a 2020 Primeurs campaign before the summer.

The union, which brings together 80 wine trade firms from across Bordeaux – collectively selling more than 90% of Classified Growths around the world – said the 2019 Primeurs campaign had been “extremely instructive and we have all learned from its successes and failures”.

As a result, it said it was now taking position for the forthcoming 2020 Primeurs campaign.

“With my colleagues, we all agree that a campaign is necessary and should take place, as usual, during both the months of May and June, to be completed at the latest beginning of July”, said Philippe Tapie, President of the Bordeaux Négoce Committee for Classified Growths.

Bordeaux Négoce said it was also keen to point out that although the timing of Primeur releases was “one of the vital fundamentals" for the success of a campaign, "price level is the decisive criteria”.

For this reason, it said it commended the decision taken by the majority of wine estates to adjust prices last year, emphasising that “these were indeed market prices and not ‘Covid' prices”.

With all the necessary health precautions, Bordeaux Négoce added that wine merchants “sincerely hope to soon be able to welcome their clients in Bordeaux, in order to maintain and reinforce this very strong and unique commercial bond that is one of the distinctive features of the Bordeaux ‘Place’ system”.

“We would like to compliment and thank all the Classified Growths and the UGCB for their numerous efforts to present to us, and to our clients, this new Vintage 2020,” said Tapie.
