GCA calls on wine and spirits industry to complete supplier survey

Published:  18 February, 2019

Christine Tacon, the Groceries Code Adjudicator, has launched her annual survey with a call to wine and spirit suppliers to “tell her the Code issues they are facing and whether the major groceries retailers are treating them fairly and lawfully”.

Suppliers can complete the survey, which is open until 23 April, at www.yougov.com/gca.

“The annual survey plays a huge role in my work,” said Tacon. “It sheds strong light on the behaviour of the retailers and tells me how well they are complying with the Code. I use the information I receive to help identify top issues and to decide where to focus my discussions with the businesses I regulate.

“I would particularly like to hear from the suppliers of wine and spirits because the response rate from the sector has not been as high as I would like in the past and awareness of my role and responsibilities remains low. I would like to have more information about the issues that are faced by the sector.

“Thanks to the large numbers of suppliers who have taken part in previous years I have been able to delve deeper into specific issues, identifying particular challenges for individual retailers to work on.

“I need all sectors and sizes of groceries suppliers to complete my survey so please take the time to fill it in, and I welcome a cross-section of views from within suppliers. I am hoping as in past years to receive more than 1,000 replies from suppliers.”

Last year, alcohol producers made up just 6% of all own label suppliers that responded to the survey. Of those that did, 19% said they were unaware of the GCA and 31% had a “poor or no understanding of the GCA’s roles and responsibilities”.

The survey is run by YouGov on behalf of the GCA and any information provided by suppliers is treated in complete confidence. YouGov will present the results at the GCA annual conference on 24 June in Westminster.
