HB Clark launches Clark’s Crossing global range in latest addition to expanding wine portfolio

Published:  09 February, 2018

Yorkshire-based wholesaler HB Clark has boosted its portfolio of own and exclusive label wines with a newly developed global range called Clark’s Crossing Private Bin.

At an exclusive tasting for Harpers, the initial four wines, comprising New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Australian Pinot Gris, South African Shiraz/Cinsault/Mourvedre and Argentine Malbec, revealed fresh, fruit-driven styles, rooted in clear varietal expression but with enough intensity to match food.

Developed in partnership with Lanchester Wines and described by HB Clark’s group wine manager David Robertson as “semi-premium”, these first wines in the new range joins wines such as the recently introduced Henry Boon own label range as part of a major push by HB Clark to develop its wine range.

“These wines are designed for easy and accessible drinking in the food-led pub sector, with a lot of attention of getting the quality and style right,” said Robertson, confirming that the wines would sell into the trade at £7.50 a bottle.

Robertson added that the £80 million turnover composite wholesaler has identified wine as a major potential growth area and one which can deliver better margins then spirits and beers in the new wave of premium pubs.

HB Clark’s managing director Jay MacKay, who came aboard in 2016 after the company came under the wing of the fast expanding Kitwave group, confirmed that the renewed focus on the wine portfolio is “about getting the mix right”, saying that the right wine offer wine “can open the door to new accounts”.

“We want to change perception, we’re not just a wholesaler with a wide range of drinks, but also a specialist wine supplier that can supply just wine to an account,” said MacKay.

MacKay also revealed that the company is to move to new premises in late 2018, with a custom built 65,000 square foot depot under construction, to include its own bonded warehouse, on a 4.5 acre site close to its existing home on Wakefield.
