Simpsons estate announces name of first fizz with help of British public

Published:  09 October, 2017

Charles and Ruth Simpson have revealed the name of their first British fizz after enlisting the help of crowdfunding investors in naming the inaugral release from their winery in, Barham, Kent.

Simpsons Wine Estate has revealed that Beora will be the name of their upcoming release, after the Saxon chief who the village Barham was named after.

The Simpsons have been working in tandem with online wine business, Naked Wines, since last summer, when 1,200 Naked Wines customers invested to help the project get off the ground.

They have since helped to choose the blend and also the name, which was shortlisted from 200 suggestions.

Eamon FitzGerald, MD of Naked Wines UK, said: “Beora is the perfect name for an historic new English fizz. As a crowdfunded wine business, wines like this wouldn’t exist without our customers. So rather than making the decisions behind the scenes, Charles and Ruth have put the power into their hands.”

The British husband and wife team left careers at GlaxoSmithKline and the humanitarian sector to open their winery, Domaine de Sainte Rose, in France’s Languedoc region in 2002.

They brought their winemaking passion back to the UK in 2014, when they bought 90 acres of viticultural land in Barham, Kent where they planted clones and rootstock of the three champagne varieties.

Their first ever English sparkling wine will be ready to drink next year.
