New appointment ups ante at Lyme Bay following BRC approval

Published:  01 August, 2017

Devon-based winery, Lyme Bay Winery, has appointed a new quality manager to continue its work into best practice.

Jimmy Lewis joins Lyme Bay from the large-scale food industry bringing across experience in ensuring quality and safety standards.

The appointment follows the news that Lyme Bay has become BRC certified, believed to be the first BRC certification for an English wine producer.

The BRC is a global standard for retailers, manufacturers and food and drink service organisations.

Lewis will join the team at the Lyme Bay winery, based in the village of Shute in Axminster.

While initially the producer grew and sourced grapes locally around the winery along the west coast, over the past few years, it has begun to source grapes from across the UK, including the southeast.

Managing director James Lambert spoke to Harpers at the recent inaugural UK Wine Awards where Lyme Bay won Best Still Bacchus - the Bacchus grapes originate from a small plot at Great Whitman’s Vineyard in Essex.

Lambert said that Lyme Bay has broadened its sourcing range in order to make the best of England’s microclimates to combine the best of east and west.

Speaking of the new appointment, Liam Idzikowski, head winemaker at Lyme Bay Winery, said: “Bringing Jimmy aboard the Lyme Bay team has brought in a fresh and experienced pair of eyes to help us continue striving for better quality and higher standards.

“His vast technical experience in the large-scale food industry offers the company a new and rigorous approach to cider and winemaking that will support us in our ongoing mission to produce the very highest quality drinks.”

Lyme Bay was started in 1992 and is best known for producing zesty still wines.
