The Wine Guild appoints Viscount Thurso as new Chancellor
The Wine Guild UK has appointed Viscount Thurso, Chairman of the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), as its new Chancellor.
Taking up his new role with immediate effect, Thurso replaces Roy Ackerman CBE, who passed away last month. He will be the Guild’s third Chancellor – the first being Lord Montaguof Beaulieu.
In addition to being IWSC Chairman, Thurso's relationship with the wine and spirits industry includes having managed a number of successful hotels, including The Lancaster in Paris, Cliveden House and Champneys, while he has also been President and Patron of the Academy of Food & Wine Service.
His appointment would “add impetus” to the many current initiatives and those ahead of The Wine Guild, said Chairman Paul Breach, adding he looked forward to working with him to achieve the organisation’s goals.
Thurso said: ”Roy Ackerman and Edward Montagu were both old and dear friends for whom I had great fondness and respect for all they achieved, so to follow in their footsteps is a real honour.”
Thurso has also had a distinguished career in politics, serving as the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross until 2015 and was a Commissioner of the House of Commons and appointed to the Privy Council.
Having lost his seat in 2015 Lord Thurso returned to the House of Lords and now also holds the position of Chairman of VisitScotland.
