Garcon obtains IP protection for its flattened wine bottle

Published:  28 June, 2017

Garcon Wines, inventor of the 750ml flattened wine bottle, has been granted IP protection for its Bordeaux and Burgundy wine bottle shapes.

The mail-order subscription company, which set out to “revolutionise” wine delivery in the UK with the launch of wine bottles that fit through the letterbox at the beginning of this year, told Harpers it had been granted IP protection in 35 countries.

Since launching the bottle in February, co-founder Joe Revell said Garcon had received interest from “some of the world’s largest wine brands”, adding it was now working closely with advisors, including winemaker and bulk wine expert Barry Dick MW, packaging & plastics specialist Sarah Greenwood and consumer packaging patent attorney Debra Smith, to build on the concept.

Claimed to be a market first, the bottles are made form tough glass-like plastic and are slightly taller than your average wine bottle, but are around half as thick. In addition, they come packaged in a cardboard box to avoid spillages once coming through the letterbox.

Subscriptions begin at £10 a month.
