Published:  12 October, 2016

South African wine producer Benguela Cove has bought a golf course in Sussex with the aim of establishing a vineyard.

Benguela Cove plans to plant some 45 acres of vineyards with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes to produce sparkling wines.

Established in 1905, Mannings Heath Golf Club is based outside Horsham in West Sussex. It currently has two courses, an 18-hole and a 9-hole.

The intention is to create a 'golf and wine estate' offering a range of hospitality services including wine tasting and fine dining.

The development is in partnership with Zimbabwe-born serial entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE.

Streeter said: "We are developing a new attraction at Mannings Heath around wine tours and tastings, food pairings and top cuisine.

"The concept is a great success for us in South Africa, and the UK is ready for it now, with the growing interest in wine, and particularly English sparkling wines. We're opening a new wine tasting bar and planning the vineyard, winery and a new restaurant on site."

Benguela Cove's South African vineyards are in Walker Bay at the start of the Hermanus Wine Route. It also owns a a restaurant in Cape Town and a 5-star boutique hotel and restaurant, Lakeside Lodge, on the Swartvlei Lagoon in South Africa's Garden Route National Park.
