South Africa faces off against England and Wales in sparkling wine test match

Published:  12 January, 2016

This Sunday, January 17, will see South African Methode Cap Classique wines go head to head with English and Welsh sparkling wines in a Cape Town tasting.

The MCC Challenge is being held at the The Vineyard Hotel, where the England cricket team recently stayed.

Two teams of eleven wines will compete to win the Riedel "Brai" Trophy, under team captains Pieter "Bubbles" Ferreira from Graham Beck and Richard Morris from Ancre Hill in Monmouth.

Pippa Goring from Wiston Estate is also participating in the tasting, alongside wine writers Winnie Bowman and Angela Lloyd, Siobhan Thompson, chief executive of Wines of South Africa, and David Edmondson from the British Consulate.

The event has been organised by Michelin-starred chef Roger Jones of The Harrow at Little Bedwn, who is also hosting a range of food-and-wine events for WOSA in South Africa this January.

"With the English and Welsh sparkling wine industry building at such a pace this will be a fabulous stage to highlight the quality of these wines outside the UK, and we are delighted to work with the UK Trade & Investment to promote these sparkling wines," Jones said.
