Manchester pub smashes own world record for varieties of gin

The Old Bell Inn in Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, has added a 600th variety of gin to its list.

The pub is the Guinness World Record holder for the most gins on offer, a feat it achieved last year when it stocked a mere 404 different gins.

The 600th gin added by owner Philip Whiteman is Manchester's Thomas Dakin, a small-batch gin named for an 18th century pioneer in gin distillation.

Whiteman told the Daily Mirror: "It's incredible to think that I have produced something that is unique in the world. We have accomplished something great that our customers can enjoy."

Alix Walker of Thomas Dakin Distillers, said: "It's an honour for Thomas Dakin to take its place in The Old Bell Inn's infamous gin emporium.

"It seems fitting that this is the gin that has been chosen as 600th as it's the gin that connects the old with the new, completing this already wonderful collection."

Thomas Dakin Gin, which launched earlier this year, has a 42% abv and retails at £29.

It was created by master distiller Joanne Moore and uses 11 botanicals, among them coriander and horseradish, known in the 18th century as red cole.

Moore said of the gin: "We have created a delicious small-batch gin, which is juniper-led, with sweet orange and citrus notes on the palate and a smooth savoury finish thanks to the cubebs and red cole."
