Ex-Tanqueray star Nichol creates new gin for City of London Distillery

Published:  22 October, 2015

The City of London Distillery (COLD) has partnered with legendary ex-Tanqueray master distiller Tom Nichol to launch a new small-batch gin.

Christopher Wren Gin is named after the architect who designed St Paul's Cathedral after the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Nichol used angelica root, coriander, liquorice and sweet orange - as well as juniper - to create the new gin's distinctive profile.

Nichol retired from Tanqueray in July after 42 years with the distiller. He is best known for creating its hugely successful Tanqueray TEN brand.

"Tom was top of the list to work with when we decided to create a new gin", said Jonathan Clark, owner of COLD.

"His expertise and knowledge is unrivalled, and together we explored a range of combinations of botanicals before landing on this superb recipe."

In the past, Nichol has expressed doubts about the ability of small-batch craft distillers to produce high-quality gins. "I know how difficult it is to come up with something," he told Harpers last year.

"Gin is very difficult to make. If I was making a new gin, it would takes months to get it right."

Christopher Wren is the second gin Nichol has created since retiring. He has also a developed a Midwestern Dry Gin for the Kansas City Rieger distillery.

Nichol received a lifetime achievement award from the Gin Guild earlier this year.
