Glenturret to mark anniversary with world-record whisky drinking

Published:  19 October, 2015

The Glenturret Distillery is hoping to bring together as many people as possible to set a world record for simultaneously raising a dram.

The world record attempt is a celebration of 240 years of whisky production.

Glenturret hopes that at least 240 people will visit the distillery on Thursday, November 5 at 5pm. Every visitor will be provided with a measure of Glenturret Single Malt with which to mark the occasion.

The toast will be followed by a giant selfie.

The Perthshire distillery is the Scotland's oldest working distillery. Single malt was first produced on the site in 1775.

It produces The Famous Grouse blend, the best-selling whisky in Scotland, as well as its own Glenturret Single Malt.

Its Famous Grouse Experience has made it the most visited distillery in Scotland, with some 100,000 visitors annually.

It recently won the UK Whisky Visitor Attraction of the Year award from Whisky magazine.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the distillery will offer free-of-charge walk-through distillery tours and pop-up catering from its award-winning Wilde Thyme at Glenturret.

Stuart Cassells, general manager at The Famous Grouse Experience, said:

"We have been producing exceptional whisky on this site, at what is now Glenturret Distillery, for over two centuries and we are unique in that we are now Scotland's only remaining producer of hand-mashed whisky.

"We are very proud of our heritage and that we are able to keep these artisan processes alive in the 21st century, 240 years after the first whisky was distilled right here, in Crieff.

"Our 'raise a dram' world record attempt is, we think, a fitting way to mark 240 years of Glenturret Distillery standing alongside members of the public and whisky lovers from the area.

"If you'd like a warm welcome, a delicious dram and to be part of Glenturret Distillery's long history then please come along at 5pm on Thursday 5th November.

"It would be fantastic if we could gather 240 people, one person for every year Glenturret Distillery has existed."

Member of the public are invited to register their interest in the event at www.theglenturret.com, where there is a page dedicated to Celebrating 240 Years.
