Jameson links with craft brewer for limited edition Irish whiskey

Published:  23 September, 2015

An Irish whiskey from casks that have previously held a craft brewer's stout has been launched by Jameson.

Jameson Caskmates went on a test sale in Ireland last year and is now being introduced to the UK as a limited edition by brand owner Pernod Ricard.

Pernod's Irish Distillers subsidiary, which makes Jameson, sent casks from its Midleton distillery to the Franciscan Well brewery in County Cork.

They were then seasoned by filling with the brewery's stout before being sent back to Midleton to be refilled with whiskey.

It will be available in the on-trade and to selected prestige off-trade accounts with an rrp of £26.

Dave Quinn, master of whiskey science at Midleton, said: "When the stout-seasoned Jameson barrels arrived back at Midleton, curiosity got the better of us and we experimented by maturing our Jameson Irish whiskey in the casks.

"We found that after around six months, the perfect balance of flavor was achieved and we couldn't be happier with the results."

Vicky Hoey, head of marketing at Pernod Ricard UK, added: "For the first time ever Jameson and stout come together to create an expression that really represents Jameson's reputation for passion and heritage, and features Irish craftsmanship, collaboration and innovation.

"We hope to surprise and delight existing Jameson drinkers by providing them with an authentic, new whiskey experience, as well as recruit craft beer fans to the Irish whiskey category."
