Greene King report shows 11% rise in eating out during July but on-trade drinking declines

Published:  27 August, 2015

The average family spend on eating out was 11% up on a year ago in July, according to the latest Leisure Spend Tracker Report from pub and brewing group Greene King.

But the average spend on drinking out dropped 4% annually and was 7% down on June.

Greene King described a 2% rise in total leisure spend as "relatively strong" given indifferent July weather when temperatures were down on both the same month last year and June.

Marketing director Fiona Gunn said: "Strong year-on-year growth of 11% shows that poor weather failed to dampen the appetite for eating out among British households in July, but did limit the appeal of drinking out and other leisure, which both saw similar declines in spending of 4%.

"Despite a mixed picture, modest growth in overall leisure spending mirrors the ongoing resilience in consumer confidence despite underlying sources of uncertainty at home and abroad."

The report - based on a You Gov survey of 4,000 people - suggests that the Rugby World Cup could give the on-trade a lift in weeks to come.

Almost half those surveyed said the would watch games and the pub was the most likely venue to do so away from home, ahead of the homes of friends and family.

Gunn said: "With the tournament being hosted in England for the first time since 1999, this competition has the potential to capture the hearts and minds of the British public."
