Release lined up for first single malt ever to be bottled in Shetland
The first ever whisky bottled in Shetland is scheduled to go on sale at the start of September.
Shetland Reel single malt has been distilled at Portsoy in Aberdeenshire but bottled on Unst by the Shetland Distillery Co.
Four casks of whisky were distilled and matured on the mainland before making three ferries journeys to the bottling site.
The casks were 50-litre octaves, two each of refill Scotch whisky casks and virgin German oak barrels.
Twenty-one bottles of a peated whisky have been produced from one of the German casks, with a price of £130 a bottle.
The remaining 151 bottles, from the other three casks, are £100 a bottle.
The whiskies are non-chill filtered, bottled at cask strength, with no colouring added.
Shetland Distillery Co director Stuart Nickerson said: "This a hugely exciting development for us and for Scotch whisky.
"It literally puts Shetland on the map as far as whisky production is concerned - and for the first time.
"These four casks represent a start to whisky production in Shetland and we have plans to introduce more bottled-in-Shetland Scotch whiskies, with the long-term plan being to install our own distillery and start distilling Scotch whisky on Unst."
Nickerson and his wife Wilma own the company, along with Frank and Debbie Strang, owners of the Saxa Vord Resort on Unst.
Nickerson was responsible for the revival of the Glenglassaugh distillery before selling it to the Benriach group.
