Grahams launches vintage port 'bond' for gifting market

Published:  08 April, 2015

Port company Grahams has launched a 'bond' that will allow people to purchase vintage port the year it is harvested.

The bond can be bought from leading wine merchants (rpp: £390) to mark a special occasion and redeemed 18 months later once the wine has been bottled and shipped. The buyer will receive a personalised certificate that can be used to mark the gift, even though the wine has not yet been created.

The company says this will get around the problem of waiting for a vintage to be declared and offered for sale in the spring of the second year after the harvest.

If a Vintage is not declared, the Bond Holder will receive two cases of Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos and in the very unlikely event that no Vintage Port at all is made in any given year due to extraordinary climatic circumstances, a full refund will be guaranteed or an alternative year offered.

Paul Symington said the vintage port bond, which will be limited in number, offered an innovative and practical solution.

"Vintage Port is the ultimate gift for marking special family occasions, particularly the birth of a child. Port has an extraordinary ability to age gracefully for 75 years and more, developing from a structured, powerful and robust young wine into a sophisticated and elegant wine in middle-age and then on to a delicate and almost ethereal beauty of wine that will continue for decades," he said. "

No other wine has such an extraordinary evolution, maturing superbly throughout a person's lifetime."

The bonds are available from wine merchants including. Berry Bros. & Rudd, Handford Wines, Hedonism, Jeroboams, Justerini & Brooks, Seckford Wines, Tanners, Vagabond, Vintage Wine & Port, Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges.
