A memorial service is to be held to remember the life and influence of legendary Lebanese winemaker, Serge Hochar, of Château Musar, who died whilst on a family holiday in Mexico over the new year.

His death has already brought tributes from friends, colleagues and business partners from all areas of the international wine trade such was his influence not only within Lebanese wine but the wider industry.

Hochar had headed up his father's winery since the late 1950s and helped establish it as Lebanon's flagship wine in its key international markets in the UK, across Europe and the United States. His personality and drive in making Château Musar the benchmark for the country's winemaking is how he will be most remembered, particularly  in the UK where he built up distribution right across the country with many loyal independent wine merchants and local restaurants.

Jancis Robinson MW was one of many leading figures in the UK wine trade who spoke fondly of their time together. She said:  "Serge was so much more than a winemaker and the driving force behind Lebanon's best-known winery. Always great fun, he gave the impression of having a deep understanding of human nature and of understanding much more than superficialities."

His remembrance service is to be held on March 4 at 1.30pm at Our Lady of Lebanon, Lebanese Maronite Church, 17 Cirencester Street, Paddington, London W2 5SR.

This will be followed by a reception at the The Athenaeum Club, 107 Pall Mall, SW1Y 5ER.
