Two of the UK's largest regional wine wholesalers have come together in a deal that sees Heritage Wines and its bonded warehouse acquired by EWGA.

It is a significant move for north west-based EWGA as it will give access to Heritage's strong contacts and accounts across the south west of England and across in to the white table cloth market in London.

Under the agreement Heritage Wines' managing director, Guy Adams, will remain with the group on a consultancy basis, but will see the majority of Heritage's sales team move over to EWGA along with its head off and bond staff at Helvan Bond outside Bristol.

It is the latest in a series of expansions for EWGA that has seen it grow from employing only two staff in 2000 to 26, prior to the Heritage purchase. Heritage is the largest in a series of acquisitions of small regional wholesalers and agency businesses.

In a statement EWGA said the "will further strengthen its position in the south and add on an important south west egional hub also serving London. There are many similarities between the two businesses which make it a natural fit".

Adrian Moeckell, EWGA's managing director, said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to integrate this well respected regional wholesaler into our existing portfolio. During the course of this process we have been impressed by the high standard of the operation and its personnel; we look forward to working with them"

Adams at Heritage Wines added: "I am delighted to be handing over to EWGA, the synergy between the two companies is uncannily strong. The move for Heritage Wine will be a positive step for all our existing 500 plus customer base adding even more wines to what will be an all-encompassing portfolio. Old Cider Mill Bonded warehouse will act as a southern base enabling EWGA to add more bonded facilities across the south west."
