Portuguese wine exports to the UK have risen 10% by volume in the first six months of 2014, compared to last year.

PortugalPortuguese wine exports to the UK have grown 10% in H1 2014Portugal is seeing increasing success in the UK, says its generic body ViniPortugal, with exports up 10% by volume and 17% by value.

That's according to new figures from ViniPortugal, which shows exports to the UK up 10.1% by volume and 17% by value between January and June 2014.

That equates to a 6,405 hectolitre increase up to 69,743 hectolitres, with value going from €18,307 to €21,419 in H1 compared to 2013. These figures include Port and Madeira wines.

When looking solely at still wine exports from Portugal to the UK, volume exports have grown by 21.6% (from 40,298 hectolitres to 48,994 hectolitres) and value has increased by 31.4% to €10,237.

Nuno Vale, ViniPortugal's director of marketing, said: "This is very welcome and encouraging news from just the first six months of this year. We are delighted to see such a robust export performance to the UK and hope that these figures continue to rise during the remainder of the year as UK consumers continue to embrace and further discover the variety and quality of Portuguese wines.

"We are equally pleased to see that the trade and consumer activities we are rolling out are helping to ensure Portuguese wines enjoy continued success in the important UK market."

Back in March, ViniPortugal claimed its sales were being misrepresented in the UK by Nielsen figures, which put it below Argentina in terms of off-trade sales. It claimed it should feature in the top 10, ousting Argentina from the chart, arguing that "hidden channels" mean its business is stronger than the South American country.

Using data it compiled from the IVV and COMEXT, Portugal claims it is the UK's 10th largest wine supplier with market share of 1.3% by value and 1.9% by volume. Its figures look at total imports  rather than information collected through scanner sales at major retailers.
