Virgin Wines records best ever sales for July

Published:  27 August, 2014

Virgin Wines celebrated its best month in its 14-year history in July, as its web sales grew 22% year on year.

The company, which specialises in online and direct sales, attributed the success to the hot weather last month.

Bestsellers included Le Dolci Colline Prosecco NV at £9.99, which sae sales almost double year on year. Another Italian, this time a Pinot Grigio from Umbria - Una Sola Voce - on sale at £7.64 down from £8.49, saw sales up 11% year on year.

Jay Wright, chief executive of Virgin Wines said: "What a great July, our sales were scorching in line with the weather and I'm thrilled to record our best ever sales since the company began in 2000. We've got a whole host of exciting initiatives up our sleeves for autumn, winter and the New Year.

Speaking to Harpers.co.uk back in April, Wright said the firm had a five year growth plan of hitting £50 million in sales [in the year to June 2013 it had revenues of £35 million], but added that he was "much more focused on the things we're doing in the business and the way we're interacting with customers".

The firm is looking at offering more fine wines, not in the traditional sense, but with a New World focus, and is ramping up its attention on online. It is looking to better personalise its web offer to each customer's interests.

Virgin Wines sells over 600,000 cases of wine to 150,000 customers around the UK. Its average customer are aged between 30 to 50 years old - 10 to 15 years younger than traditional mail order companies. Over 90% of its wines are exclusive to the business. It employs 150 people in Norwich and Preston. Wright led the company in a management buyout from Direct Wines back in November 2013.

Virgin Wines' average bottle price is £7.99, and customers spend £110 per order on average.
