Tesco is cutting prices on a range of top wines as it starts clearing warehouse stock ahead of the Christmas rush.

The clearance sale started yesterday on Tesco Wine by the Case and runs across thousands of cases of wine, the retailer said. It will continue until midnight on September 2, with half price discounts available on some wines.

Included in the sale are the 2008 Château Camensac, Haut-Medoc which is reduced by 46% from £179.94 to £96.48 (equivalent to £16.08 per bottle), Chapel Hill's 2010 McLaren Vale Grenache, which is down by 43%, from £107.94 to £61.86 per case (equivalent to £10.31 per bottle) and the 1998 Château Grand Pontet, which was £240.00 per case and is now available for £149.28 (equivalent to £24.88 per bottle), a reduction of 28%.

There are some major reductions for Bordeaux wines included in the clearance, including a 2002 Château Trotanoy, Pomerol, where a six-bottle case is reduced by 42% from £570.00 to £329.

For a six bottle case of Taittinger Brut Vintage 2004, the price has been slashed by 43% from £300.00 to £170.22 or £28.37 per bottle.

Stuart Anderton, category manager for Tesco Wine by the Case, said: "As we near the busy festive season the decision was reached that extra space was required for incoming stock in the storage warehouse. Many of the lines in the clearance sale are remainders of smaller parcels of wines and so have limited stock -  it really is a case of 'hurry while stocks last'.  The clearance sale includes some truly great wines, with prices ranging from over £50 per bottle to under £4 - highlighting the breadth of the range of wines that are constantly available through Wine by the case."
