Heather Dougherty has been appointed as the new chairman of the Association of Wine Educators.

Dougherty, who switched her career from the travel industry to wine, has been involved in wine education for the last eight years and has been an active member of the AWE for the last five years. She is also a regular contributor to Harpers, member of the Circle of Wine Writers and writes a regular wine column for the Surrey Advertiser.

Dougherty said of her new role:  "I feel privileged and honoured to have been elected as chairman of the AWE. We are a dynamic and active association and my aim is to build on the networking of our previous chairmen to continue to raise the profile of the AWE and to demonstrate the high standard that we set for professional, qualified wine education in the UK and abroad."

The AWE was founded in 1993 and currently has 87 members in the UK, and is building its international membership with educators in Ireland, Portugal, France, US, Brazil and Hong Kong in the association. Members must hold a minimum WSET Diploma in Wine and Spirits and are assessed for their teaching skills before joining the group.
