VILLA MARIA TO BOTTLE ENTIRE PRODUCTION UNDER SCREWCAP

Published:  23 July, 2008

Villa Maria, New Zealand's largest privately owned wine company, is to become the world's first major winery to bottle its entire production under screwcap. George Fistonich, owner and managing director of the premium-wine producer, has announced that he would rather turn down orders than seal the wines under cork. He said: We have had to inform some distributors who have ordered cork closures in the past - such as our distributor in France - that from 2004, it is screwcaps or nothing.' Villa Maria started bottling under screwcap in 2001; by last year, 96% of its production was under the closure. Villa Maria is distributed in the UK by Hatch Mansfield.
