Grant Gordon, William Grant & Sons life president, died in New York on December 21, 2013, aged 86, surrounded by his family.

Along with his brother Sandy, Grant Gordon turned the small family company into one of the world's major players in Scotch whisky.

His contribution to the worldwide drinks trade is being marked at memorial services in New York on February 18 and his hometown of Glasgow on February 21.

Described as "a large personality", Grant Gordon's warmth and charm alongside his long-term vision led William Grant & Sons to international recognition.

He launched Glenfiddich internationally and pushed the global development of William Grant & Sons' brands while acquiring an American import house. This historic move meant the company had control over its own sales and distribution.

The company's chief executive, Stella David, said: "Charlie brought an incredible energy to his life's work. When one looks at the way he always maintained the integrity of our Scotch whiskies whilst at the same time innovating new brands such as Hendrick's Gin and Reyka Vodka, it is easy to see why he was so highly regarded throughout the world. The commemorative services in New York and Glasgow are a celebration of a long and fruitful life and of a man who contributed so much to the global spirits industry."

Glenfiddich will be releasing a commemorative expression in his honour later in 2014.
