John Hynard, the highly respected independent wine merchant, died over the Christmas period.

Hynard, who had been living in his retirement home in Tenerife since 2004, helped build up the family business, Hynard Hughes, to be one of the country's most respected independent retail and wholesale business. He was also one of the founding members of the Independent Wine Buyers Consortium.

The family would like to thank friends and colleagues in the trade for their support and released the following statement:

"It is with great sadness we announce the sudden death of respected independent wine merchant, John Hynard.  John joined his father in the family business of Hynard Hughes, in 1960 after his three years Army National Service.

"He was one of the founder members of The Independent Wine Buyers Consortium and built up the well known Leicester wine and spirit wholesale family business to 10 retail shops at its peak.  Finally selling the majority of the business, he retired to Tenerife in 2004 but kept his hand in the trade with some brokerage and en primeur trading.

"He was a keen fly fisherman and golfer, latterlyfitting in three rounds a week.

"He leaves behind his wife Sheila and two sons, Colin and Simon."
