Vino Fresco hopes to capture share of the lighter wine category with new carbonated drink

Published:  23 December, 2013

A new wine based drink, Vino Fresco, hopes to tap in to the drinking trend popular across the Mediterranean of adding carbonated lemon and lime with red wine to make a refreshing style drink.

The concept has been created by brand develpment agency, Z Limited, and has been picked up as Vino Fresco by E&J Gallo for the US market. The wine is made in Spain, where this style is drink is known as tinto de verano. In Venice is is known as a bevanda and is made with gassosa in Rome.

The wine, said Z Limited, "is mixed with a lightly carbonated lemon and lime drink, neither too sharp nor too sweet". The combination is said to "complement red wine, unlike normal lemonade which detracts from the wine's taste. In simple terms, it does for wine what shandy has long done for beer," said Z Limited.

Vino Fresco has an alcohol content of only 4% and hopes to capture some of the growing lighter abv wine and wine-based RTD categories.

It comes in a 50cl size as that is seen as the right format to preserve the carbonation.
