New Hall founder Piers Greenwood capped off a winning year with the release of his Sparkling English Rosé magnum at the East Anglian Vineyard Association's recent trade tasting..

Named Winemaker of the Year in the 2013 English & Welsh Wine of the Year awards, as well as supplying his grapes to leading wineries around the country, including Camel Valley and Chapel Down, Greenwood was responsible for all five of East Anglia's trophies in this year's EWW competition.

"He's like the uncle of East Anglian wine," said Giffords Hall Vineyard's Linda Howard.

Renowned as a Bacchus specialist, with a good harvest safely in, Greenwood is looking forward to making more wines under the New Hall name, with rosés likely to grow in prominence. His Pinot Noir-dominated sparkling blend shows good depth of red as well as soft fruit on the palate.

Freshly back from escorting her EWW trophy-winning wines around Tokyo and Korea as part of a pan-EU trade delegation, Howard also shared an elegant rosé, this one a little more Provençal in style.

Meanwhile, Shawsgate showed its screwcapped range, including its top-selling blend, Pandora, a regular on P&O and available through Enotria, and its sprightly, lemon-meringue infused Brut 2004.

With its summer-fruit finish, Lavenham Brook's Symphony Pinot Noir Rosé 2012 impressed - in short supply at the moment, until 2013 comes through - as did West Street Vineyard's White 2011, an aromatic, zesty blend of Faber and Bacchus.

The tasting took place at The English Wine Barn, West Street Vineyard's impressive cellar door, restaurant and tasting room complex. Located in the historic village of Coggeshall, near Colchester, with terraces overlooking the vines, it boasts over 60 English wines and an automated wine wall for sampling. Prices range from £14.99 for New Hall's Rosé 2012 up to £65.99 for Furleigh Estate's Classic Cuvée 2009.

New Hall wines are available from Promotion Wine, Hallgarten (London), and the vineyard.
