Richard Evans completes his sailing race to Rio to raise money for prostate cancer

Published:  16 October, 2013

Richard Evans of Dedicated Wines has helped his team finish fourth in the first leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht race sailing race between Southampton and Rio de Janiero as part of an initiative to help raise awareness of prostate cancer.

In all it took Evans and his team 26 days to complete the journey, but in so doing has helped raise nearly £8,500 for Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. Evans was supported in his efforts by many members of the UK wine trade including main sponsor Rhone producer, Cellier des Dauphins, Les Dauphins, Vindivin, Grandissime, Amphora, Phillips-Hill Wine Marketing, Guy Anderson Wines and Harpers Wine & Spirit.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht race features tweleve 70ft yachts that compete in a series of eight legs around the world. Evans was competing in the first leg of the race and covered 5,630 miles non stop before arriving in Rio de Janiero on October 10 having left Southampton on September 1.

Evans was inspired to take part in the race after he underwent tests for prostate cancer last year. Although he was given the all clear he met such "amazing" people as part of his treatment that he wanted to give something back and look to raise awareness for future treatments of the cancer.

Evans put up the following blog post on his special www.Ricardoracestorio.com site after completing the race, summing up his feelings about his sailing adventure: "Well.. Here we are in Rio! Sitting at waters edge drinking beer & Caipirinha's and musing over the adventure.

"26 days of constant sailing, no sight of any land, in a massive massive ocean. Seeing dolphins, turtles, flying fish & whales but not catching any tuna!!

"So what thoughts... ?

"Firstly, a huge thank you to everybody who supported me, either with donations or their specialist skills. I feel very very privileged to be amongst so many kind and generous people.

"Thank you to all those who followed me, 2,000 hits on website and 86% voting for me to carry on!

"This is what I have observed: Our world is a beautiful and powerful place. Call it what you will; God, Nature, Mother Earth or whatever your household Gods are. We are grains of sand on our planet and that's the beauty of it, our tiny universe within our planet which in itself is a grain of sand etc... Our successes and challenges are hugely important in our own universes but of no consequence in the bigger picture and that should give us a much better perspective on them.

"I leave you with two quotes:

"'Oonly those who risk going too far can ever find out how far they can go" - Oscar Wilde

"'You rarely regret the things you have done but often regret those you haven't" - Sir Robin Knox Johnson

"So, be brave, be adventurous and enjoy our beautiful planet.

"Thank you so much for your love and support ..."
