Published:  31 July, 2013

Digby Fine English, a new English sparkling wine, launched yesterday in London with grand ambitions to become a global sparkling wine brand.

Digby is named in honour of the 17th century English philosopher, politician and inventor Sir Kenelm Digby. He is recognised as the inventor of the modern day wine bottle.

Trevor Clough, co-founder of Digby Fine English, said at the launch party in Hyde Park: "These first 10,000 bottles are like my children and I want to find every one of them a good home."

He, along with felllow co-founder and chief executive, Jason Humpries, are confident that they have a wine, and a brand that can in time become a "truly global brand of English fizz".

The Digby Fine English 2009 Reserve Brut, rrp £32, and Digby Fine English 2009 Rose Brut, rrp £39, are sourced from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes from selected vineyards mainly across across Kent, Sussex, and Hampshire and is produced using the the Traditional Method. Future releases include a Vintage Brut 2010 and a Blanc de Noirs Brut 2010. Respected English winemaker, Dermot Sugrue, has been brought in to make the wines.

Digby Fine Wine's long term strategy is to act as the English equivalent to a negociant, finding partner growers that can help it grow and expand with demand.

The English sparkling wine will be available initially in selected on and off-trade outlets, including an exclusive listing in Selfridges, as well as independent merchants Vagabond Wines, the English Pantry and restaurants including Charlotte's Bistro.
