McGuigan to release mature vintages of Bin Series 9000 Semillon

Speaking in London last night, Neil McGuigan, chief executive of Australian Vintage, announced that mature vintages of the McGuigan Bin Series 9000 Semillon will be released in the UK later in the year.

Presenting a vertical of the Bin 9000 Series Hunter Valley Semillon spanning 2012 to 2003, McGuigan said "we are very proud of the quality and this is our commitment to this variety."

Only 1,500 six-bottle cases of the Bin Series 9000 Semillon are put aside each year, so only small quantities of the wine, retailing at about £25, will be available.

Julian Dyer (pictured), general manager in the UK for Australian Vintage, added that "Semillon is not a style that many people see, but we want to raise the flag on the world stage".

Dyer confirmed that the wines will be available via independent retailers which also have an internet presence: "There will be museum releases of two vintages available by summer, we have not decided which vintages they will be yet."

Underlining uniqueness and quality, even with just a handful of wines, so McGuigan, is central to counteract the notion that Australia only produces high-volume value wines and to ensure a profitable future for the wine industry.

"If you treat wine like a commodity, you are going to get commodity prices," he stated and admitted that "commercially, Semillon has been a hard sell but these wines will create a halo effect for the country. We've got to push quality. You've got to lift the bar in everything you do and that is why these wines are so important."

McGuigan feels that Australians have an "obligation to show these wines to the world" and also plans mature releases of Eden Valley Riesling.
