Leading economist Sir Howard Davies set for WSTA conference

Given the tough trading environment right now, the WSTA has drafted in top economist Sir Howard Davies to speak at its annual conference next month.

How to achieve "growth in a low-growth environment" is the theme this year, as chief executive Miles Beale said recent member meetings revealed this was one of their main preoccupations.

"Davies fits the bill for us. He's worked in a government advisory capacity, as a regular economist and in academia. Since he's currently based in Paris, he can bring the French view to play as well," Beale added.

The current bleak economic outlook, which could last for the next 10 years, Beale warned, means firms are asking how they sustain growth in these difficult times.

"Our wine members in particular are fundamentally affected by the eurozone crisis, which is very unpredictable."

Davies is recognised as one of the foremost economists of his generation - he was previously chairman of the Financial Services Authority and deputy governor of the Bank of England, before becoming professor of practice at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris.

Following his presentation, there will be a "Question Time-style" debate with members of the trade, to discuss ideas from wine and spirits companies to help businesses develop in this climate.

Beale said members were keen to "get beyond" too much of a wine and spirits focus, and wanted to hear from someone on the economic outlook and wider prospects.

The WSTA Conference will be held on September 26. Contact Louise Vaux for more details.
